Purpose and Scope

The Childcare Center Educator is responsible for maintaining a safe and fun environment for young children. Their duties include coming up with creative and educational activities, preparing and serving snacks to children and maintaining a clean environment for the children.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Provide care for children, such as setting schedules and routines, grooming, feeding, changing diapers, and cleaning rooms and toys.
  2. Develop and encourage age-appropriate learning and socialization to ensure children learn basic skills and concepts, such as communication, manners, sharing, etc.
  3. Maintain a safe workplace by monitoring children for health, behavioral, and emotional issues and reporting concerns to staff and parents.
  4. Help children discover new interests by introducing them to art, music, sports, and other potential hobbies.
  5. Ensure children are learning positive behaviors and providing guidance or approved discipline, as needed.
  6. Prepare children to enter the next level of care or for entry into school.
  7. Keep records relating to childcare.
  8. Work with parents to help children progress towards educational and behavioral goals.
  9. Complete all Pre-K Assessments outlining milestone achievements.
  10. Adhere to the instructional pacing as outline by Early Childhood Department and selected instructional curriculum.
  11. Follow all Head Start health, nutrition and safety guidelines as outlined in the Performance Regulations and Standards.
  12. Complete at least two home visits per school term.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with:

  • a bachelor's degree in child development or early childhood education; or
  • a bachelor's degree or beyond with at least 24 hours of early childhood hours; or
  • a bachelor's degree or beyond with a CDA license
  • Any candidate who only holds a bachelor's degree, but does not meet the other requirements, must agree to enroll in a CDA program to be completed within six months of hire. 

Must possess or be able to obtain certification in CPR and First Aid.  (PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED).

Degree Equivalency Formula:

Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.

Master’s Degree= 2 years plus required years of experience. Where Master’s degrees are required, years for Bachelor Degrees must be included. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Behavioral analysis and cognitive recognition abilities for anticipating and addressing potential interactions or issues.
  • Caring and compassionate attitude when interacting with and caring for children.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills to converse with children, fellow professional caregivers and parents or guardians.
  • Excellent patience and stamina for keeping up with the demands of children of all ages.
  • Advanced multitasking and organizational skills to handle multiple children at a time.
  • Strong understanding of stages of childhood development.

Physical Requirements and Working Environment

Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment.

 

Unavoidable Hazards:  The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.

 

Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
